THE BACKPACK PROGRAM
Ms. Best also runs the Backpack Program on Thursday afternoons. Students identified through kitchen staff, teachers, parents and assistants are given a bag of food on Thursday afternoons to ensure some nutrition over the long weekend. 504 COORDINATOR FOR K-8
Ms. Best serves as the 504 coordinator for K-8. The Rehabilitaition Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination of any student with diagnosed disabilities in federal programs (including schools). Students who qualifiy for a 504 can receive accommondations within the school setting that allow for them to better access school. Ms. Best serves as a liaison for homeless families in Salmon under the McKinney Vento Act of 1987, Ms. Best's job is to maintain a list of children who qualify as homeless and ensure that they receive access to education in regards to food, transportation, and Title 1 services. INDIVIDUAL/SMALL GROUP COUNSELING
Ms. Best uses Short-Term Solution-Focused and Cognitive Behavior Techniques in her individual and small group sessions. Both theories are found to be highly effective and efficient in school settings and are aimed at goal setting and problem-solution as opposed to traditional analytic approaches. Issues that are addressed include; grief, depression, social skills acquisition, school/test anxiety, learning disabilities, behavior difficulties, self esteem, relational issues, and homework/organizational concerns. More severe or time intensive needs are referred to outside services within the community. Please fill out this form if you would like to refer your child or student for counseling services |

RtI COMMITTEES
Ms. Best serves on two RtI committees, the Pioneer 3-5 and the SJSHS RtI Committees.. Response to Intervention is a school program that identifies students who are struggling and attempts to remediate the problem by trying interventions to meet their specific needs.
